There are some 147 beats along the course of the river Usk. In yester year, fishermen and women would fish the same beat on the same day of the week throughout the season.

In 2003, the advent of the Passport Scheme run by the Wye and Usk Foundation (WUF)  opened up fishing all along the river and enables fishermen and women to gain access to fishing on the majority of the river.

The below map outlines a few key beats over the course of the river Usk. It shows the course of the river from its source high in the Brecon Beacons to the estuary at Newport. The map will allow you to zoom in to specific areas of the Usk and even gain directions to the beats illustrated.

In addition to the WUF Passport Scheme, there are fishing clubs and associations as well as websites that have information about fishing.

In addition, anyone can fly-fish for trout on the purchase of an 'Usk Town Water' permit from Sweets Fishing Tackle shop (Porthycarne Street, Usk NP15 1RY, phone 01291-672552).  Permits can be for one day, one week or one season. Jean Williams, who runs Sweets Fishing Tackle shop, is a great source of information about the state of the river. Jean may also be able to tell you about the private salmon fishing beats in the area and make links for you with owners.
