Invasive Species of Shrimp

In the last week it has been confirmed that a new invasive species of shrimp has been found in Cardiff Bay. Although it is harmless to humans it will cause extreme damage to the natural environment of the bay and any area it comes in contact with. It could also have repercussions in our area should it be inadvertently spread throughout the Usk catchment.

This species of shrimp called Dikerogammarus villosus (nicknamed the ‘Killer Shrimp’) was first found in Grafham Reservoir, Cambridgeshire in September of this year. More recently, it has been found in Eglwys Nunydd reservoir and, as mentioned, in Cardiff Bay.

The Harbour Authority are requesting that all persons act responsibly when moving vessels or other equipment (such as anglers’ keep-nets, waders, wading boots, etc) between waters. This applies to ALL anglers, so please do your bit and make sure your gear is checked and cleaned before visiting another water.
